4 Maoists including 3 women gunned down by police in Koraput

Koraput: In a big blow to red rebels following Sukma ambush in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, security personnel gunned down at least four Maoists including three women cadres during an encounter near Dokari Ghati in Narayanpatna in the district last night.

Informing on the encounter, Inspector General (IG) of Police (Operations) R P Koche said a gun battle erupted between suspected members of Andhra-Odisha Special Zonal Committee of CPI (Maoist) and a joint team of District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operations Group (SOG) late in the night during a combing operation. The operation which was being carried out following a tip-off witnessed a bloody exchange of fire in which four Maoists including three women cadres were shot dead.

The police personnel destroyed a Maoist camp in the forest during the operation and seized huge cache of articles from the spot including 10 kit bags and 3 rifles.

Police have seized the bodies of all four dead Maoists from the forest and suspect more casualties from the red rebel’s side in the encounter.

The exchange of fire was continuing in the area till this report was being filed.
