Cuttack: At least three houses were reduced to ashes and property worth lakhs gutted in a major fire break out at Majhisahi village under Shankarpur gram panchayat in the district on Saturday.

The mishap took place this morning after somebody lit up garbage lying at a dumping yard located near Jatra Padia in the village. The flames erupting out of the dumping yard soon caught up houses in the Majhisahi village due to strong wind and reduced one Babaji Sahu’s house to ashes completely. Later on flames kept on jumping from one house to another in the village before residents could do anything to douse the fire.

However, things went out of control after LPG cylinder kept in one of the houses engulfed by flames caught fire later on, resulting in a massive explosion. Panicked over the incident hundreds of locals evicted the village and took shelter in Jatra Padia for hours, to save their lives.

The fire was brought under control after Choudwar Fire Brigade teams reached the spot swung into action.

No casualty has been reported in the incident.
