Phulbani: In an absolute mockery of the government’s efforts to end corporal punishment in schools in the state, a Headmaster in Baliguda area in Kandhamal district meted out inhumane punishment to at least three girl students and left them critical on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Harischandra Sahoo, Headmaster of Mahasingi Nodal Upper Primary School located in K. Nuagaon block.

As per the complaint, Harischandra went berserk this morning and thrashed Shradhanjali Dalei, Rachana Pradhani and another Class 8 girl student of his school mercilessly after they refused to sweep the school floor.

The victim students fainted on the spot due to the thrashing and were rushed to Baliguda Sub Divisional Hospital in critical condition following the incident by their parents, where their conditions are stated to be stable now.

Tension erupted at the school premise later as the parents demanded immediate transfer of the accused Headmaster over the incident. They claimed that the accused Headmaster was found involved in similar kind of incidents in the past and hence should face stringent action.

“We have taken the incident with a serious note and a probe has been ordered into it. The accused would not be spared if the allegations levelled against him come out to be true,” said Pramod Kumar Mallick, BEO, K. Nuagaon.
