2 hardcore Maoists gunned down in Balangir of Odisha

Balangir: In a major achievement, Balangir Police gunned down at least two hardcore Maoists and seized arms and ammunition from their possession in an encounter which took place in Bhalukhai-Dudukamal forest under Belpara block in the district last night.

The killed Maoists have been identified as Area Commander of outlawed CPI (Maoist) group Rakesh and top cadre Sanjib.

The encounter took place after Balangir Police got a tip-off on the presence of 10-12 Maoists in a local’s house in the village late in the night. The Maoists had gathered to attend a feast. A joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) jawans led by Balangir SP K Siva Subramani raided the house late in the night and tried to nab the red rebels. However, a bloody gun battle ensued between the cops and the Maoists subsequently in which the top cadre duo were shot dead.

While the rest of the group of red rebels managed to give police a slip, they seized two AK-47 and Insas rifles along with some daily use items from the spot.

The killed Maoist Sanjib was also carrying a cash reward, said police.

Bodies of the dead Maoists have been kept at the Belpara Police Station following the encounter.

Northern Range DIG Satyabrata Bhoi has reached the encounter site and taking stock of the situation till this report was being filed.
