Lionel Messi FC Barcelona’s Captain For New Season

Madrid: Argentine Football star Lionel Messi has replaced Spanish footballer Andres Iniesta as the new captain of Spanish football giant FC Barcelona for its new season. The news came after Iniesta, who was Barcelona’s captain since 2015, joined the Japanese club Vissel Kobe.

After Inieta’s exit, Lionel Messi will lead as a full time skipper at the La Liga championship. Messi had earlier lead the club before Andres Iniesta came on board in 2015.

Furthermore, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto would be the second, third and fourth captains of the Barcelona club respectively. This is the first time that Gerard Pique has been given the role of the captain of the club, since his return to the Spanish side from Manchester United in 2008.

Notably, all the four captains are graduates of La Masia, which is Barcelona’s famous youth academy. The 31-year-old Messi, who joined the club over a decade back, is currently Barcelona’s top goal scorer. At present, FC Barcelona is vying to defend the La Liga trophy from their rival Alaves in the La Liga Championship on August 19.
