IND Vs AUS Chennai: India beat Australia by 26 runs through Duckworth Lewis method in the first one day international at MA Chidambaram stadium here on Sunday night.

In the rain affected match, the Kangaroos were bundled out for 137 for nine in 21 overs while chasing the revised target of 164 runs off 21 overs as per Duckworth/Lewis method.

Earlier, opting to bat after winning the toss, India made 281 for 7 in the stipulated 50 overs. On a pitch with more bounce than an average Indian ODI surface, the top order batsmen got out cheaply. Opener Ajinkya Rahane departed for 5, while Rohit Sharma managed to score 28 off 44 balls. Skipper Virat Kohli and Mainsh Pandey, coming at no 3 and 4 respectively, went for ducks.

However, Pandya produced a hurricane 83 off 66 balls while Mahendra Singh Dhoni slammed 79, taking the score from 87 for five to 281 for 7. Kedar Jadav (40) and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar (32*) also made useful contributions. For the visitors, NM Coulter-Nile took three wickets.

Dhoni also completed the coveted landmark of 100 international half-centuries across all three formats. The 36-year-old is now the 13th cricketer in the history of international cricket to complete a ton of 50’s. The ICC congratulated Dhoni via Twitter.

Chasing the target, Australia did not have the best of starts and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Only Maxwell tasted reasonable success hitting 39 off 18 deliveries.

For the hosts, wrist spinners YS Chhahal scalped three wickets, while chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav and  Pandya shared two wickets each.

Pandya received the Man of the Match award for his match winning all-round performance. With this victory, India have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
