Cape Town Test: India 28/3 after bowlers restrict SA for 286 on Day 1

Cape Town: India were 28 for 3 at the close of the opening day play of the first cricket Test against South Africa here on Friday.

Cheteswar Pujara with 5 and Rohit Sharma without score were on the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.

For South Africa, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, the home team chose to bat after winning the toss. However, superb performances by Indian bowlers, led by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, helped the team to restrict South Africa for a modest first innings total of 286 runs.

For the Proteas, De Villiers emerged as the top scorer with 65 while Du Plessis contributed 62.

For India, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the main wicket-taker with an analysis of four for 87 in 19 overs, while Ravichandran Ashwin claimed two wickets. Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya took one wicket each.

After nine successive Test series win, India, the number one Test side, is brimming with confidence and will be eying to clinch its first Test series win against the Proteas.

India has won only two Tests and lost eight games in South Africa.
