New Delhi: India’s badminton champion PV Sindhu won a silver after losing out to Spain’s Carolina Marin on Sunday in the finals of BWF World Championships at Nanjing in China. This is the second consecutive time Sindhu settled for a silver medal at the World Championship. She lost by 19-21, 10-21 to her Spanish counterpart.

Although Sindhu started the game strongly, leading by 14-11 in the first game at stage one, she was overpowered by Marin in the second game who later went on to win her third World Chamionships Gold Medal. There came a point in the game when the Spaniard had lost focus which culminated in her losing five points on the trot. However, she bounced back with vigour and did not give Sindhu a chance to position herself.

Sindhu lost 21-19, 21-10 in the final and had to settle for a silver medal for the second straight time in World Championships. This came as a major disappointment for her as she was vying to win the coveted gold medal this time. The match, which lasted for 46 minutes, saw Sindhu leading 11-8 at the break in first game and then 14-9 but she was soon dominated by Marin who surged and capsized her Indian opponent, scoring a 15-15 before tasting victory at a stupendous 21-19.

Interestingly, Marin had earlier defeated Sindhu in the Rio Olympics finals too. She had earlier won gold at the World Championships in 2014 and 2015.
