Bhubaneswar: People in the capital city of Odisha on Monday will experience the Zero Shadow Day during which their shadow will be exactly under them, making it look like there are no shadows.

People need to take a small jump to see their own shadow, said Subhendu Patnaik Deputy Director of city based Pathani Samanta Planetarium.

“The Zero Shadow Days fall during the movement of the Sun towards the Tropic of Cancer in the north (Uttarayana) and towards the Tropic of Capricorn in the south (Dakshinayana),” he added.

“The phenomenon takes place because the rotation axis of the Earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5° to the axis of revolution around the Sun. When the location of the Sun moves from 23.5° N to 23.5° S of Earth’s equator, all places whose latitude equals the angle between the location of the Sun and the equator will experience Zero Shadow Days,” Patnaik said.

While the residents of Bhubaneswar will experience the development at 11.43 am on May 21 and 11.53 am on July 22, it can be seen in Cuttack at around the same time on May 22 and July 22.

Special arrangements have been made at the Pathani Samanta Planetarium here, where students and others can experience this rare phenomenon.
