Wood mafias attack forest officials during raid in Odisha

Paralakhemundi: At least 27 forest officials were injured after being attacked by wood mafias during a raid at Balinala forest on Gajapati and Ganjam border yesterday.

According to reports, Mohana and Baragada forest officials conducted a joint raid after getting information of wood smuggling in the forest by a group of more than 70 wood racketeers. However, they were attacked by the mafias following which the forest officials ran for life. One of the forest guards had gone missing and was traced after four hours of searching.

The unidentified wood mafias also vandalised two vehicles of the forest department and allegedly looted guns from the forest personnel.

The injured forest officials are undergoing treatment at Baragada Community Health Centre.
