Bhadrak: Tension ran high in Karanapali village under Bansada tehsil in Bhadrak district last night, after hundreds of members of a women’s group attacked a liquor-laden SUV and ransacked hundreds of bottles of liquor, following an accident.

The incident took place at around 7 PM in the evening while a Mahindra Bolero (OD 22 G 1124) carrying the liquor consignment was on its way to Dhamra from Bhadrak Town. After the driver of the vehicle lost control over the wheels and dashed against a bike near Karanapali village, a group of angry locals intercepted it and a heated exchange of words took place between the two sides.

Later a group of women joined the mob and attacked the driver of the SUV after dragging him out of his vehicle. Reprimanding him against liquor trade in the area the attackers destroyed several liquor packets kept in the vehicle.

Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control after assuring the agitating women to take action against the liquor traders.

Notably, in May this year, a number of women groups in the panchayat had organised a protest and later submitted a charter of demand to the district administration and the Excise Department to put a check on the illegal liquor trade in the area.
