Woman trampled to death by jumbo in Cuttack

Cuttack: In the latest incident of elephant attack in the state, a wild tusker trampled a woman to death in Nuagarh village under Narasinghpur police limits on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Laxmi Jena (50), a resident of the same village.

Laxmi along with a group of women visited the Budha Budhi garden located near the village early in the morning to pluck mangoes. While collecting mangoes the group came across a wild tusker which had sneaked into the garden the previous night and tried to escape from the spot. While, all others managed to get away, the jumbo lifted the victim with its trunk and trampled her to death after throwing on the ground.

Forest officials reached the spot and sent the body of the deceased for autopsy at Badamba Hospital.

The district administration has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs 20,000 to the bereaved family of the deceased in the case.

In a similar incident, a tusker had trampled one Binod Barad of Khairapanga village of Badamba block in the district to death a few days ago.
