Balngir: People in Agalpur and Loisinga blocks in the district have been in a state of panic for the last ten days as a large herd of wild elephants caused extensive damage to the standing vegetable and paddy crops in the region.

A heard of over 30 elephants were last seen this morning near Bharsinga and Rot villages under Agalpur block. The jumbos destroyed a mango orchard in Rot village yesterday.

Over 100 acres of grown paddy crops in villages of these two blocks have been damaged by the elephants who reportedly came from Barapahad forest range bordering Sonepur district.

The villagers, who have been in panic over the wild elephant menace, resorted to chasing away the elephants by beating drums and bursting crackers.

The forest officials have asked the locals to stay at safer places and not to attack the jumbo. “We are trying to drive away the elephant into the jungle,” said a forest official.
