Western Odisha Lawyers launch 6-Day Bandh

Sambalpur : Lawyers of at least 11 districts in Western Odisha began a week-long cease-work agitation from today to press their demand for setting up of a permanent High Court bench in Rourkela.

All Western Odisha Lawyers’ Association has called a 6-day long bandh in this regard. Offices of state and central governments, courts and banking institutions will remain closed in the region till February 24, sources said.

However, educational institutions, hospitals & health care centres, and transport services will continue to function normally in these period, sources added.

“National Law Commission has already ordered the Orissa High Court to submit a report regarding the setting up of a permanent High Court bench in Western Odisha. However, both the Union and State Governments have been delaying the process,” said an agitating lawyer.

Besides establishment of a permanent bench of High Court, the charters of demand of the agitators include immediate appointment of judges against the vacancies and establishment of a vigilance court in Rourkela among others.
