Wall collapse kills woman, son in OdishaBalangir: A woman and her minor son were killed after a mud wall collapsed on them at Rugudipada Municipality colony of the district on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Jasmit Markami and her son Bitu.

Sources said that the mishap took place after a portion of their rented mud house collapsed on them while they were sleeping. Markami’s grand child was also sleeping there, but was safe.

Locals rushed the duo to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in a critical condition, where doctors declared Bitu brought dead while Markami died while undergoing treatment.

“We rescued a woman and two children. While one of the children was declared dead by the doctors, the woman succumbed to her injuries while being treated in the hospital. The mud wall collapsed possibly after it got soaked in the rain water,” said a local.

Meanwhile, it is alleged that one Prabha Ray has constructed several mud houses in the colony by encroaching government land and rented them out to many poor families for Rs 300 to 400.

Ray claimed that she had asked Jasmit to vacate the house after noticing the weak condition of the house, but the latter had refused to budge.
