Villagers stage road blockade in Puri village over youth’s drowning

Puri: Hundreds of people staged a road blockade at Rua Square under Chandanpur police limits in the district today morning, after some miscreants torched a house in Arala village over past enmity last night and a youth was killed after drowning in a pond during fire extinguishing efforts.

The deceased youth has been identified as Nabin Jena, a resident of Arala village.

The mishap took place late in the night after a group of men from of neighbouring Talajanga village arrived at one Rabi Jena’s residence in the village and set it on fire. After Rabi’s family members and villagers came to know about the blaze they tried to douse it immediately. During the fire extinguishing efforts Rabi’s son Nabin slipped into a pond and drowned to death in a bid to fetch water.

Palpable tension prevailed in the village over the incident and locals staged a road blockade keeping the victim’s body on the road today morning and demanded a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to his kin. They also demanded stringent action against the accused in the case.

As per the latest reports, the road blockade has been removed by the villagers after local Tehsildar granted a compensation of Rs 3,500 to the victim’s family and assured them of action against the guilty. A separate ex gratia amount of Rs 10,000 has also been granted to his kin from Red Cross Fund.
