Bhubaneswar: Five Odia passengers have sustained injuries in the derailment of the Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express at Khatauli Station in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday evening. However no Odia passenger was killed in the mishap, which took a toll of 21 persons of which five have been identified so far by the railway authorities.
The deceased have been identified as Sukhi Prajapati, Alok Sarkar, Bhadra Sen, Karishma and Brij Raj Pandey.
The five injured people from Odisha have been identified as Madhu Mandal, Amiya Das, Debendra Das, Jatri Das, Mubarak Ali and Sabita Mallick.
Briefing media persons on the derailment, East Coast Railway PRO Nirakar Das said 99 passengers from Odisha were travelling in the Utkal Kalinga Express at the time of the incident and three of them have been injured in the derailment. No report on the death of any Odia passengers had been received so far, he added.
“We are in constant touch with the Northern Railway Authorities and all arrangements are being made for the rescue and treatment of Odia passengers affected in the incident,” Das assured.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA from Odisha Rabi Nayak visited the Muzaffarnagar Hospital and met the injured persons today morning. After taking stock of the condition of the injured, Nayak informed that the hospital had done ample arrangements for the treatment and doctors are attending on the injured at regular intervals. However, he informed that one of the injured Sabita Mallick of Nuapada village of Balasore district had suffered spinal cord injuries in the mishap and needs specialised treatment. He added he would take up the matter with Railway authorities as well as Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Notably, around 130 passengers were injured after the Kalinga Utkal Express derailed at Khatauli Station—around 25 km away from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. According to Railway sources, 26 of the injured are critical.
