Untimely rain drives farmer to end life in Jajpur

Jajpur: A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide in the district on Tuesday after his paddy crop was damaged by unseasonal rain.

The deceased farmer identified as Suresh Sahoo (49) of Sundarpur village under Binjharupur Police Station area had availed a loan of around Rs 80,000 from village money lenders to purchase seeds and fertilizers for farming. However, following an untimely rain recently Suresh’s paddy fields suffered crop damage and all his hopes for a bumper harvest this season were ruined.

Worried over crop loss and under immense mental stress to repay the loans, Suresh killed self by hanging to a tree near his home in the village, this morning.

Binjharpur Police have reached the spot and lodged a case of unnatural death in the incident.
