Bhubaneswar: The United Nations (UN) has hailed Odisha government’s efforts in transforming lives of people at the farthest mile. This was informed by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The UN said that since 2003, the International Fund for Agricultural Development has partnered with the Odisha Tribal Empowerment and Livelihood Programme to improve food and livelihood security for tribal communities in the state. In 2009, with the success of the initiative, the programme was expanded to reach out to particularly vulnerable tribes such as the Bonda in Baundispada of Malkangiri district.

When the initiative was expanded to this remote village, a group of women came together to form the village’s first and only self-help group (SHG). The group helped the women to assemble and sell solar lanterns. This helped to empower many in the community to think of a better future for their families.
