Malkangiri: Launching a crackdown on illegal paddy transporters, the food supply and consumer welfare department officials raided on a number of Paddy Procurement Centres (PPC) in the district last night and seized two vehicles loaded with paddy. Three persons were taken into custody.

The raids were conducted on PPCs by a team of officials under the supervision of Malkangiri Sub-Collector in the areas of MV-2, Kandapalli and Padia. During the raid, the officials seized a paddy laden 407 pick-up van (Registration Number OR 10 B 2376) along with a lorry truck (Registration Number OD 30 9972) being used in transporting paddy illegally.

While cases were registered against eight persons in the incident, three were arrested during the raids.

“Our team conducted a raid on Kandapalli PPC and found large scale irregularities. It came to our notice that middlemen are involved in selling paddy at the facility after buying them in low price from farmers which is illegal. While cases against eight have been lodged at Padia Police Station, three of them have been arrested,” informed Manoj Pradhan, food supply department official.

“While the exact amount of the paddy seized is being assessed, department would hold more such raids in the coming days,” he added.
