Baripada: Normal life disrupted in Baripada on Thursday due to a dawn-to-dusk bandh called by Mayurbhanj Adibasi Students Association (MASA) protesting against irregularities in payment of Post-Matric Scholarships to tribal students in the region.

The vehicular traffic on the roads came to a grinding halt in and around the town as the protestors staged road blockade in various places, connecting to the district headquarter.

The tribal students were seen picketing in the town by burning tyres at different locations.

The educational institutions and business establishments also remained closed due to the 12 hour bandh.

“Since last 10 days, we have been protesting in front of Maharaja Purna Chandra Autonomous College to press our demand for timely disbursement of stipends to the tribal students. But, the authorities didn’t pay heed in this regard,” said an agitating student.

“If the State Government fails to fulfil our demand, we will intense our protest in coming days,” he added.

However, the DWO claimed that the stipend money of around fifty per cent of students has already been credited to their respective bank accounts and the rest will be disbursed in a day or two. He also appealed the agitating students to call off the bandh and co-operate with the administration.

Meanwhile, the district administration has deployed adequate police forces to maintain the law and order in the town.
