Train Engine Detachment: 7 Railway officials suspended, high-level probe ordered

Sambalpur: Taking prompt action in the Ahmedabad-Puri Express train engine detachment incident which took place at Titlagarh Railway Station here last night, Railway authorities suspended five more staff on Sunday for dereliction of duty, taking the total number of suspended officials to seven.

Informing on the action Sambalpur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of East Coast Railway Jaideep Gupta said, those who have been suspended from their duties include two engine drivers, three carriage repairing officials, one loco pilot and one assistant loco pilot.

Similarly, the DRM ordered for a high level inquiry by a team of four senior officials of Railway Department who have been told to submit the report within three days.

The unfortunate incident took place few minutes after the Express train arrived at the Titlagarh Railway Station at around 9.30 PM last night. While the engine shunting process was underway at the railway station at least 22 bogies of the train started rolling down the tracks sans an engine and continued on the downgrade track till Kesinga Railway Station covering around 15 kilometers. The train slowed down at the Kesinga Station as the upgrade track starts there and some passengers stopped it by putting stones on the track with the help of railway staff.

The Railway Department suspended two of its staff namely Srikanta Kharavel and Dharmendra Nihal for forgetting to apply skid-brake during the shunting process immediately after the incident yesterday.
