Nuapada: In a crackdown against timber mafia, forest officials seized Khair wood logs worth over Rs 5 lakh and arrested 3 after raiding a lorry truck at Biju Patanik Square under Khariar Forest Division in the district last night.

The arrested persons have been identified as the truck owner from Chhattisgarh Gurjeet Singh, driver Ramesh Sharma and helper Kalu Khan.

The raid was conducted after Khariar Forest Division officials got a tip-off on the timber-laden truck late in the night. A team of forest officials later chased the truck and searched it after intercepting at Biju Patnaik Square. After a large number of Khair wood logs were found kept in the truck, the officials seized the vehicle and took the trio into custody.

Forest officials said the logs were being smuggled to Uttar Pradesh from neighbouring Balangir district via Nuapada.

The accused trio has been forwarded to court by the Forest Department.
