Tension at Balasore Hospital after school student’s death

Balasore: Tension prevailed at the district headquarters hospital here last night after a Class 9 student of Balasore Balashram under Sahadevkhunta police limits died under treatment and his family members held school authorities responsible for the death.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Mallick, son of Shankar Mallick of Tapaswi village under Balasore Sadar Police Station area.

As per the Balashram authorities, Santosh climbed atop a tree located on the school premise to pluck black berry last evening and fell off it after his foot slipped. He sustained critical injury on the right side of his head and latter suffered a brain haemorrhage. Though the school authorities admitted him to the Balasore DHH, he died there under treatment.

However, soon after the boy’s death news reached his village his family members rushed to the hospital and created a ruckus. They claimed that the boy had been murdered by the school staff and demanded compensation.

“I suspect the school authorities’ hand in murdering my child. I reached the Balashram to bring my son to home in the morning on the same day but the caretaker of the school one Mamata Madam did not allow me for the same. I heard the news of my child’s death by 10 PM in the night. I want my child back,” said the deceased minor’s mother Kanak Mallick.

Balasore Collector Ramesh Rout along with Sub Collector and Tehsildar reached the hospital and granted Rs 20,000 compensation from the Red Cross fund to the kin of the deceased and tried to pacify the angry locals. He also assured them of action against the guilty once the postmortem gets done.

Remuna MLA Gobinda Chandra Das who also reached the spot had demanded a compensation of over Rs 10 lakh for the kin of the deceased.

The body has been rushed for autopsy and an investigation by police is underway in the case.
