Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister on Monday expressed his deep concern over the flooding problem on the premises of world famous Konark Temple in Puri district saying it poses a major threat to the World Heritage Monument. Besides, he requested the Centre to take up immediate steps for proper drainage of water from Sun Temple and make it water-logging free on a permanent basis.
In a letter to Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma, Patnaik said it is imperative to take up the measures to drain out water from the Sun Temple premises for enhancing the longevity of the temple complex as well to facilitate the visitors to witness the glory and grandeur of the standing 13th century edifice.
“The Archaeological Survey of India — the custodian of the temple may be asked to take up immediate steps for proper drainage of water on a permanent basis,” he wrote.
The CM further stated that the state government would be extremely keen to take up the drainage work, if Archaeological Survey of India gives due permission. “However, what is important is that the flooding problem that poses threat to this World Heritage Monument is immediately attended to and a permanent solution is found,” the CM said.
“I hope the Government of India would take necessary measures immediately to save this magnificent pride of our culture and heritage,” he added.
“While taking up a small-scale test- digging in the year 2003, an original drainage system was noticed, which might have served the purpose of draining out the rainwater from the temple precinct,” CM further said.
Notably, the UNESCO had declared the Sun Temple of Konark as a World Heritage Monument in 1984. The ruins and the conserved structure delineates the culture, literature, art, heritage and history of the bygone era, particularly, it represents the creative brilliance of Odisha’s unique temple architecture and craftsmanship.
