swimming poolBhubaneswar: A group of swimmers held a demonstration in front of the Biju Patnaik Swimming Pool Complex in Kalinga Stadium here this morning and demanded immediate rollback of the Odisha Government’s order to demolish swimming pools in the complex.

The agitating swimmers resorted to sloganeering against the state government for its decision to raze the swimming pools inside the stadium without making any alternative arrangements. Dubbing the decision unilateral, the swimmers said it would have been better if the government had held a discussion with around 200 members who practise in these pools every day before going ahead. They claimed that losing an opportunity to practise daily would affect their career.

Notably, the Odisha Government took a decision recently to demolish the swimming pools located inside the Kalinga Stadium to make room for expansion of the galleries. The expanded galleries would accommodate more spectators during the men’s Hockey World Cup scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar next year.

However, Sports and Youth Services department sources dubbed the apprehension of the swimmers as baseless as arrangements are being made to provide them the same opportunity at the OCA premise in Cuttack, for which logistic support would also be provided.
