Puri: Serial rapist and killer Buddhadeba Behera, who was arrested yesterday in connection with the recent Delang rape and murder case, will be produced in the district court here on Thursday.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Central Range IG Soumendra Priyadarshi said that the accused Behera is a sexual predator.
“Apart from the rape and murder of a woman at Delang at Puri distrct on August 1, Behera has so far killed four other women in a similar manner by first developing friendship with them and then drugging, raping and slitting their throats,” said Priyadarshi.
“During our interrogation, Behera confessed that he had committed similar crimes in Deogarh, Bairi village, and Nuagaon in Odisha, and another in Andhra Pradesh in the last five years,” the IG added.
In 2010, a case was registered against Behera for torturing his wife for dowry. He was arrested in the case but managed to escape from the clutches of the police while under treatment at a hospital. He committed his first rape and murder in Deogarh in 2012, the IG informed.
Beherea, a resident of Bhinnahaja village under Kundeigola police limits in Deogarh district, was nabbed in connection with the Delang rape and murder case by a special team of Odisha police from Jajpur on Wednesday.
The accused works as a labour agent for various labour intensive industries in Andhra Pradesh. He takes women labourers from Puri, Kandhamal, and Khurda regions to work in the neighbouring state. All his victims were from among these labourers, police said.
