Bhubaneswar: Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), prohibiting unlawful assembly, was imposed on the Utkal University campus here after violence erupted on Sunday.
The prohibitory orders were issued after low-intensity bombs were hurled at the boundary wall of ladies hostel No. 5 and 6 in Vani Vihar this afternoon.
Tension ran high in the University campus after some miscreants hurled bombs following a group clash over the ensuing students union polls.
Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Twin City Police Commissioner Y.B. Khurania and Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi rushed to the spot after getting information about the violence in the campus and tried to pacify the irate students. The unruly students, however, clashed with the police personnel in front of the main gate of the university, forcing the police to impose Section 144.
Meanwhile, a meeting is underway between the policemen and university officials on how to maintain law and order as well to hold the forthcoming studentt union elections.
The bomb hurling incident took place a day after a student was attacked inside the campus by a group of students belonging a students’ party.
