SC lifts stay, gives go ahead for IIT, NIT admissions

SC lifts stay order, gives green signal for IIT, NIT admissions New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday lifted the stay order it had issued on July 7 gave the green signal for admission into premier institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) to continue. The stay had been granted on a petition challenging grace marks awarded to candidates.

The Court has also directed the High Courts not to entertain petitions regarding counselling and admission to IITs to avoid any confusion.

This apart, the court also directed the IITs to give an undertaking that such mistakes will not recur and no situation to award bonus marks will arise.

The IITs had awarded bonus marks to all candidates as there were wrong questions during the entrance test.

Protesting the decision, a girl candidate had knocked the doors of the Apex Court saying grace marks should not be awarded to the students who did not attempt the wrong questions following which the court had stayed the ongoing admission on July 7.

The court had also restrained High Courts from accepting any writ petition in the matter.

Around 1.7 lakh students had registered for the JEE-Advanced examination in 2017 out of which 1.6 lakh appeared for the test on May 21. Altogether 50,455 students were declared to have qualified on June 12 and are vying for 11,032 seats across 23 IITs.

Around 300 students out of 2700 had made it to the merit list.
