SC to hear Odisha plea on Mahanadi dispute today

supreme courtNew Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear the plea filed by the Odisha government relating to the Mahanadi river water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh today.

On December 2016, the government of Odisha had moved the apex court against the neighbouring state over the alleged illegal construction of barrages in the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi River.

The Naveen government had filed thel suit in the Supreme Court under Article 131 of the Constitution.

Earlier, the Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti had called a Chief Ministerial level meeting in New Delhi, but nothing came out of it with both sides sticking to their guns.

Sharing of Mahanadi water has been a bone of contention between the two state governments for nearly two years. It has been a major political issue in the state of Odisha since the river happens to be the lifeline of the eastern state.

The ruling BJD and Opposition Congress had separately staged demonstrations protesting against the BJP ruled Chhattisgarh as well as the Union Government in this regard. Both the parties had also submitted separate memorandums to the President of India requesting him to intervene in the issue.
