Sambalpur: Taking action in Sambalpur custodial death incident which sparked large scale violence this morning, Odisha Police suspended the Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) Srimanta Barik, Diary Charge Officer (DCO) and the Sentry of Ainthapali Police Station from their duty of late.

Informing on the departmental proceedings against the guilty police officials to media, Odisha DGP RP Sharma said the trio was present at the time of the incident in the police station and made gross dereliction of duty. He assured that strong action would be taken against them after a probe.

“An HRPC inquiry has been ordered in the incident and it would be carried out under NHRC guidelines. A three-member team of HRPC team has already rushed from Cuttack,” said Sharma.

“In addition, the North Zone IG Sushant Nath has also been asked to conduct an inquiry at his level and submit a report on the incident. Similarly, the Sambalpur SP has also been asked to prepare and submit a joint report with the District Magistrate in the incident,” he added.

Earlier in the day a number of police officials of Ainthapali Police Station were hurt and SDPO Abakash Routray sustained injury on head after hundreds of locals attacked them following the custodial death of one Avinash Munda (19) of Bhalupali village.

While the deceased had been picked up by police from his home on Wednesday on charges of mobile theft, he was found hanging from the police station toilet last night. While police claimed it to be a case of suicide, the kin of the deceased alleged that the youth was beaten to death by cops.

Cops resorted to lathi charge on the protestors after they set the police station afire and damaged several vehicles.
