Jajpur: An on-duty officer-in-charge of Jajpur Town Regional Transport Office (RTO) was killed after being mowed down by a Hyva at Nuapada Square on NH-215 in the district last night.
The deceased RTO in-charge has been identified as Manoj Behera.
The incident took place late in the night while Behera had been deployed on the NH and was inspecting heavy vehicles passing through the Nuapada Square. The RTO in-charge checked transport documents of a coarse-aggregate-laden Hyva and allowed it to go. However, the driver of the Hyva lost control over his vehicle soon after driving away from the spot and ran over Behera, killing him on the spot.
While tension ran high at the Nuapada Square following the mishap, the Hyva driver managed to escape from the site.
Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena, Jajpur SDPO Kedarnath Sahoo along with a police team reached the spot getting intimation and rushed the body for postmortem to Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).
Korai Police is investigating into the incident and trying to trace the absconding Hyva driver.
