Balasore: Unidentified miscreants looted cash worth Rs 36 lakh after breaking open at least two Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in separate incidents in Balasore town last night.

In the first instance, a group of SUV-borne looters struck the Sunhat Bazar SBI ATM in the wee hours of night and removed the ATM’s cash box with the help of gas cutter and decamped with Rs 26 lakh kept in it. The ATM was completely gutted due to the fire triggered by the use of gas cutter.

Similarly, an unspecified number of burglars detached the cash box of another SBI ATM located at ITI Square in the city in the same night and fled with it. The box was carrying Rs 10,000 at the time of loot. The looters followed the same modus operandi and used advanced equipment including gas cutters to open the machine.

Both the loots came to fore in the morning after some customers reached the ATMs for cash withdrawal and found those vandalized. They immediately called up police and reported the incident.

IICs of Sahadevkhunta and Balasore Town police stations have reached the spot and took stock of the situation.

Similarly, Balasore SP Jugal Kishor Kumar Banoth have formed a special police team to investigate the case.
