Rourkela Hospital Fire: Injured 9-day-old infant dies under treatment

Rourkela: A nine-day-old infant, who had sustained critical burn injury in Rourkela’s Om Appolo Hospital fire tragedy on Saturday died under-treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar today.

Tension ran high near Om Appolo Hospital after the doctors treating the infant declared him dead this morning and the news spread. The family members of the infant, who were on a strike in front of the hospital since the tragedy, demanded immediate sealing of the hospital and an inquiry by the district administration into the incident. They also alleged that the hospital lacks in fire protection machinery and runs without a valid license.

Meanwhile, the district administration has deployed policemen near the hospital to avoid any untoward incident.

The infant identified as the son of one Manoj Das of Deogaon village near Rourkela had been admitted to the Om Appolo Hospital due to jaundice and was under treatment in the Newborn Ward when the mishap took place. At around 4 AM on February 17 sparks erupted in the Ward and soon spread to the whole Ward leaving the child with 70-80 percent burn injury. He was rushed to the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) by the Om Appolo Hospital authorities and then shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar due to critical condition.
