Cuttack: A 17-year old rape victim, who tried to kill herself on March 7, passed away during her treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Tuesday morning.
The deceased hailed from Tunpur village under Salepur Police limits in the district. She was pursuing +2 in Reba College in the district.
Meanwhile, Police today arrested Arun Biswal of the same village in this connection as per an FIR filed by the father of the deceased girl.
Police sources said, 45-year-old Biswal had allegedly added some drugs in the victim’s cold drinks and then sexually assaulted her in a car near Jagatpur area around two months ago. The accused had also allegedly taken some nude pictures of the girl, sources added.
Later, Biswal started blackmailing the victim and demanded money regularly. He also threatened her not to reveal the incident before anyone or else he would kill her father and brother. This matter seemed to have forced the girl to commit suicide, mentioned her father in his complaint.
The girl attempted suicide by hanging herself at her residence on March 7. However, she was rescued by family members with the help of neighbours in a critical condition and immediately rushed to the SCB hospital.
“We will take appropriate action after seeing the autopsy report,” Police said.
Earlier in January this year, two alleged rape victims including a minor tribal girl of Koraput district in the state had committed suicide for not getting justice.
