Rairangpur woman raped and set afire by father-in-law dies

Rairangpur: The Rairangpur woman of Bazarsahi area who was set ablaze after being raped in the hands of her father-in-law died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Jamshedpur of Jharkhand under last night.

The victim with over 95 percent burn injuries breathed her last late in the night at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) where she remained admitted since January 12, the day of the incident.

Rairangpur Police arrested the accused father-in-law Gopal Chandra Khemka following the death of the victim last night. Victim’s mother-in-law, husband and sister-in-law are still absconding.

Gopal raped the victim on the day of the incident finding her alone at their residence. After she protested and warned to take the matter to the notice of her family members, the accused set her ablaze after pouring kerosene. Victim’s husband Avinash Khemka also sustained burn injuries in a bid to save his wife.

After the victim’s family members lodged a case against her in-laws at Rairangpur Police Station the next day, the incident came to fore.

Police had detained the accused yesterday acting upon the complaint.
