New Delhi: The Railways has prepared a blueprint to celebrate the 150th year of Mahatma Gandhiji’s birth anniversary as a ‘Vegetarian Day.’

The Railway Board has given a proposal not to serve non-vegetarian food to passengers on its premises, stations and trains across India on October 2, for three consecutive years (2018-2020).

If the proposal gets green signal from the Culture ministry, which is coordinating all events related to the 150th anniversary celebration of Gandhi, October 2 will be celebrated as both Rashtriya Swachhta Diwas and ‘Vegetarian Day.’

This part, the Indian Railways has plans decided to run a special salt rake from Sabarmati on March 12, to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March. Swachhata trains from Sabarmati will connect various stations linked with the life of Mahatma Gandhi.

Besides, Tickets with watermark of Gandhi’s image will also be sold to the passengers to observe the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of the father of the nation.

Moreover, stations at all divisional headquarters and their various administrative buildings and those of zonal headquarters will have murals of Gandhiji. The Railways has also given its proposal to set up digital museums there, depicting significant activities undertaken by the Mahatma.

A special logo designed by the ministry of culture has been proposed to be displayed outside the coaches as well as next to the seat numbers, so that it can be seen by the public.

Earlier on May 2, President Ram Nath Kovind chaired the first meeting of the national committee, which includes eminent thinkers, Gandhians, Chief Ministers of all the states among others, for the commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, during the meeting, had said that inclusion of non-violence in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution will be the greatest tribute India could pay Gandhiji on his 150th birth anniversary.
