Prime accused among 8 arrested in Chhatrapur Councillor killing

ChhatrapurBerhampur: Ganjam Police arrested eight persons, including the main accused, in the Chhatrapur NAC Councillor Laxmidutta Pradhan murder case on Friday. The accused were nabbed from locations both inside and outside the state.

The arrested have been identified as Prabhat Kumar Nayak, Surya Kumar Nayak, Prem Kumar Nayak, Ishwar Reddy, Kuna Nayak, Jeeten Kumar Nayak, Susheel Nayak and Prashant Swain.

Informing the media on the arrests at a press conference here Gajam SP Ashish Singh said, three accused were nabbed with the help of CCTV footage available with the police and five others were arrested from different locations later on. He added, following the brutal attack on Laxmidutta, the prime accused Prashant drove others in the car of Susheel Nayak to Bhubaneswar.

Police have also seized the wooden stick, steel pipe and a sword used in the attack, said the SP.

Notably, Ward no. 6 Councillor Laxmidutta was dragged out of his house in Chhatrapur on the fateful day by a group of assailants and brutally hacked with sharp weapons. While the Councillor was rushed to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, he succumbed to his injuries soon after reaching there. Odisha Police formed three teams led by Ganjam SP Ashish Singh following the incident to nab the culprits, some of whom had sneaked into neighbouring states after committing the crime.
