PhailinPuri: Tension erupted near Chandanpur area on the Puri-Bhubaneswar NH on Sunday morning after hundreds of Phailin-affected people from Krushnaprasad and Brahmagiri blocks were prevented by police from staging a road blockade there. The protestors, under the aegis of Paika Krushak Matsyajibi Sangathan, are on a march to Bhubaneswar from Puri to press their demand for concrete houses under the Biju Pucca Ghar Yojna.

The Phailin-affected people of the two blocks embarked on a walk to Bhubaneswar from Malatipatapur in Puri district yesterday in a unique form of protest and waded through Chilika water for around 5 kilometres to reach at Chandanpur Square this morning where they resorted to sloganeering. The angry protesters blamed the state government for the inordinate delay in granting them aid under the Odisha Disaster Recovery Project (ODRP). They demanded houses under Biju Pucca Ghar Yojna immediately. Later, they were preparing to stage a road blockade when police teams from Chandanpur and Puri Sadar reached the spot and prevented them from doing so. Police also detained some protesters, but released them after a talk.

Notably, the Phailin-affected people from Krushnaprasad and Brahmagiri blocks would march through Satyabadi-Pipili-Uttara route on Puri-Bhubaneswar NH to reach the state capital by tomorrow to hold a demonstration against the government’s apathy in addressing their issue.
