People raise a toast with ‘Pana’ in Odisha as Odia New Year begins

Bhubaneswar: Religious fervour gripped the state and denizens were seen sharing ‘pana’, a traditional cooldrink prepared with fruit contents, mainly wood apple and sugar among them as they celebrated the beginning of Odia New Year today.

Devotees in large numbers thronged the temples across the state starting from the morning and offered prayers. Long queues of people were seen before Lord Hanuman temples as the day also happens to be the birthday of the deity.

Prime Minster Narendra Modi took to the twitter and wished Odias from all corners of the world on this auspicious day.

Similarly, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also wished the people of the state on this occasion and prayed near Lord Jagannath for a year of prosperity for them ahead.

The Odia New Year is celebrated on the day of the Maha Bishuba Sankranti every year. The new Odia almanac comes to effect on this day. Among major highlights of the festival the Tulsi plant is worshiped in the courtyard of every Odia household in a special manner on this occasion.
