Bhubaneswar: Manoj Maharana of Bhabarada village of Polsara block in Ganjam district has broken the Guinness World Record of ‘Most straws stuffed in the mouth (hands off)’ that stood unbeaten for eight years.

Maharana created the new record by cramming 459 drinking straws into his mouth at once and held them for ten seconds.

Simon Elmore had held the previous record by stuffing 400 straws during the Mark ‘N’ Simon Show in Germany.

The rules for this title state that the challenger is not allowed to use his hands to support the straws during the 10-second period. The challenger is only allowed to use elastic bands around a cluster of straws to hold them together.

The official of the Guinness World Records said that the ‘Most straws stuffed in the mouth (hands off)’ is a tough challenge as the participant is not allowed to use hands to support the straws.

However, there is another variation to this record, and that is ‘Most straws stuffed in the mouth (with hands)’. As the name suggests, challengers to this title are allowed to use their hands to hold the straws in their mouth. They are therefore able to fit more straws into the mouth. Guinness Rishi from India has created a record of holding 496 straws in his mouth on the set of Guinness World Records – Ab India Todega in Mumbai in 2016. Rishi had all his teeth removed so that he could cram more straws in his mouth.

The 23-year-old Odisha boy had stuffed 21 lit candles in his mouth during a show before the Sub-collector earlier on May 23, 2017. He had also tried to create record for stuffing most number of grapes into the mouth by stuffing 90 grapes at a time.
