Odisha youth dies in Maharashtra jail, kin suspect foul play

Kendrapara: An under trial prisoner from Odisha died at Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai of Maharashtra recently. However, his family members claimed that he has been killed by the staff of the jail.

According to reports, one Batakrushna Swain (20),  a resident of Chhanda under Marshaghai police limit in Kendrapara district, was arrested by Mulund West police for peddling ganja along with three other associates on last March 12.

Apart from Swain, Maheshwar Kumar, Chinmay Sahani and Divya Jyoti were also arrested by Mulund West police and lodged in Taloja jail.

A case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were registered by Mulund West police station.

All of them were produced in court and remanded into Taloja jail custody after their bail petitions were rejected by court.

Swain’s family members alleged that his bail petition was scheduled to be heard by the court on Monday. For which his elder brother, Rashmi Ranjan Swain had gone to Mumbai to arrange a lawyer for him.

On Wednesday afternoon at about 4 PM, Rashmi Ranjan met his younger brother Batakrushna Swain and talked with him in the jail, they claimed.

Later, Rashmi Ranjan returned by a train on Thursday. But, he received a telephone call from the jail authority that his brother died on Thursday morning inside the jail and the jail authorities asked him to collect his body. However, they did not inform anything about the cause of his death and under what circumstance he died, alleged his kin.

Claiming that Batakrushna was killed by the jail staff, they demanded a high-level inquiry in the incident, and threatened to take legal action against the jail personnel.
