Odisha police starts probe into selfie inside Srimandir

PURI TemplePuri: Taking suo-motu cognizance of an incident in which a youth was found taking a selfie within the hallowed precincts of the Lord Jagannath Temple here recently, the Puri police started a probe into the incident on Tuesday. The action was taken after the photo went viral on social media raising serious security concerns.

Talking to medai persons here today, Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi said police had initiated an inquiry into the matter suo motu as it came to him only through the media and no case hds been filed. The main task of the police would be to trace the boy who had posted his selfies taken inside the 12th Century shrine in the social media identifying him as a “Sevayat” (servitor), he added. However, Sarangi insisted that frisking is conducted at all four gates of the temple and mobile phones are not allowed inside.

Notably, Puri police as well as the Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) suffered sharp criticism from various forums in the state and abroad as selfies shot inside the Srimandir and Gundicha temple started doing the rounds of various social media. Even more shockingly, one of the pictures also featured the holy trinity on the sacred citadel of Ratna Singhasana.

While a set of selifies taken by a youth, who identified himself as a “Sevayat”, emerged on his Facebook wall on Monday, a similar stock from a Bengali woman with the Srimandir at the background had gone viral earlier.
