Odisha observes Birsa Munda JayantiRourkela: The 142nd Birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, great freedom fighter of the country, was observed across the state on Wednesday.

People of all walks of life at different places of the state paid their homage to the national hero.

On this occasion, special cultural programme was organised in Rourkela where traditional dance was performed by many artists.

Many dignitaries of the Steel City including Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) Chief Executive Officer Ashwini Kumar, Rourkela ADM Monisha Banerjee and Deputy Commissioner of Rourkela Municipal Corporation Sushma Bilung attended the programme.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT & KISS, also paid his rich homage to the tribal freedom fighter.

“I pay homage to Bhagwan #Birsa_munda on his birth anniversary and recall his courage and effort towards empowerment of tribal communities,” said Dr. Samanta on his Twitter page.

Birsa Munda, the tribal freedom fighter was born at Ulihatu in Jharkhand on 15 November, 1875. He spearheaded an Indian tribal religious Millenarian that arose in the tribal belt of modern-day Bihar and Jharkhand in the late 19th century, during the British Raj, thereby making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement. His achievements are even more remarkable for having been accomplished before the age of 25.

His portrait hangs in the Central Hall of the Indian parliament, the only tribal leader to have been so honored.
