Bhubaneswar: The Revenue and Disaster Management Department of Odisha Government has asked the District Collectors of eight districts to submit a detailed report on the damage of crops due to pest attack, following farmers in different parts of the state set their pest-affected crops on fire and suicide of a farmer in Bargarh district.
In a letter on Wednesday, Additional Relief Commissioner Mihir Chand Mallick asked the Collectors of Bargarh, Balangir, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nuapada, Sambalpur and Subarnapur to conduct necessary joint verification through field functionaries of Revenue, Disaster Management, and Agriculture and Farmers’ welfare Departments and submit the report along with detailed information about the area under crop loss to the extent of 33 per cent and above within two days.
Mallick also stated that senior officers of the district to supervise the exercise and make cross verification to ensure a correct report in this regard.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Secretary Saurabh Garg informed that all farmers, whose crops were affected by pest attack, would get adequate compensation by the State Government after joint review of the reports by Revenue and Agriculture Department.
Yesterday, Brunda Sahu, a farmer of Kalapani village in Bargarh district, who had burnt his damaged crop on the paddy field on Tuesday after failing to address the pest problem, committed suicide by consuming poison at his paddy field.
