NuapadaNuapada: The Garib Sena, a local political outfit, has observed a 12 hour bandh in Komna block in the district on Friday protesting the government inaction over various farmers’ issues in the region.

The Garib Sena members alleged that over 20 farmers have committed suicide in last three years due to crops loss in the region, but the government has not provided any compensation to the aggrieved family members.

“Over 20 farmers in this region have committed suicide in last three years.  There is a severe drought this year. The government has failed to address the farmers’ issues such as supply of enough water, fertiliser, qualitative seeds etc,” an agitated protester said.

“We demand the State Government to declare the entire Nuapada district as drought-affected area and provide Rs 10 lakh compensation each to the kin of 20 farmers who committed suicide in last three years,” he added.

“If the State government does not provide adequate compensation to the aggrieved family at earliest, we will intensify our protest in the coming days,” another protester warned.

The vehicular traffic on the roads came to a grinding halt in the Komna town as the protesters staged road blockade on NH 353. The educational institutions and business establishments remained closed due to the dawn-to-dusk bandh.

The Garib Sena member also resorted to picketing and road blockade in important junctions of the town.
