Odisha: Dreaded criminal Chagala killed in Police encounter

Nayagarh/Cuttack: Dreaded criminal Chagala Mallick was killed in an encounter by the Nayagarh police late Thursday night. The encounter took place near Nabaghanpur village under Sadar police limits in the district headquarter in Odisha.

The criminal sustained bullet injuries in his both legs during the encounter. He was rushed to the Nayagarh District Headquarter Hospital first and later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he was declared brought dead.

Police seized a pistol and many live bullets from the slain criminal. However, two of Chagala’s associates managed to escape in the darkness, police said.

“Based a tip off that some miscreants came here to organise a crime, we headed to the spot. On finding us face to face, they opened fire forcing us to retaliate. During the shootout, Chagala received two bullets on his both legs, while two others managed to flee from the spot”, said a police official.

Chagala belonged to Raniola village under Niali police limits in Cuttack district. He was a close aide of notorious gangster Tito. More than 50 cases, including murder, extortion, robbery etc. are pending against Chagala at different police stations in the state, police claimed.

Incidentally, 56 year old gangster Tito, involved in several crimes, suffered bullet injury in an encounter with Special Task Force (STF) of Crime Branch near Chandikhole in Jajpur district on June 30.
