Odisha CM Announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for Mayurbhanj Minor rape victim

Baripada: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kin of the Mayurbhanj minor rape victim. This was informed by Mayurbhanj District Collector Vineet Bhardwaj.

The eight-year old minor of Garudabasa village under Betnoti Tehsil of the district was abducted, raped and murdered last evening by one Jaminikanta Mahanta of the same village.

The minor girl had gone missing after leaving her house for Raja Sankranti revelry. However, the incident came to fore after few locals in the village saw the accused while taking the minor on a ride on his bicycle at around 4 PM.  After being detained and thrashed heavily, Mahanta confessed raping and murdering the minor after abduction.

Betnoti Police reached the spot with scientific team and seized the body for autopsy and arrested the accused.

“The accused has confessed the crime. As the minor girl was protesting and try to run away, Jaminikanta slapped her hard following which she collapsed,” said SDPO Govind Sethi.

Notably, there has been a surge in sexual crimes against minor girls in the state in the recent past
