Bhubaneswar: The Odisha unit of BJP on Wednesday vehemently criticised the ruling BJD for extending support to Cuttack-Choudwar MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal, who has been taken on remand by the CBI in connection with the multi-crore Sea-Shore chit fund scam.
Addressing a press meet here, BJP MLA Pradeep Purohit questioned the commitment of the ruling BJD towards the people of the state.
“BJD chief and Chief Minister of the State Naveen Patnaik always says – “Law will take its on Course”—then why is the ruling party defending a chit fund accused person and obstructing the CBI proceedings in this regard?” he asked.
“The BJD must clarify whether it stands with the 10 lakh people of the state, who have been duped of a total of Rs. 20, 000 crores in the chit fund scam, or it will defend the scamsters like Biswal,” he added.
The BJP MLA also slammed senior BJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Prasanna Acharya, who has thrown his weight behind Biswal.
“As many as 12 persons died after taking poisonous drugs when Acharya was the Health Minister of the State. Justice Naidu Commission submitted its detailed report in this case in 2015, but the government has kept it under wraps.” Purohit said. “If the government tables the Naidu report, the true face of Acharya will come out,” he said.
Meanwhile, hundreds of BJD activists staged a demonstration in front of CBI office here protesting against the arrest of Biswal yesterday.
Biswal and his wife Laxmibilasini were quizzed several times during the past three years by the CBI in connection with the chit fund scam.
