child sellBhadrak: Taking prompt action in the case of the sale of a one-year-old boy by his father to a stranger in Kuansha village under Bhadrak Town police limits on Monday, the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) rescued the baby on Tuesday.

Confirming the rescue, the Bhadrak CWC informed that it raided the house of Ssomnath Sethi, a resident of Kuansha village yesterday evening and took the child under custody. The mother of the child Barsha Mukhi was also taken into custody, it added.

Both the mother and the child have been lodged at ‘Ashiana’, a short stay home in Bhadrak.

Bhadrak Town Police has started a probe into the case and is interrogating the father of the child Pandya Mukhi and Balia Mukhi, a neighbour of Pandya who acted as a middleman in the deal. Both of them are in police custody since yesterday. Contrary to initiatl reports, it has now emerged that Barsha was kept in the dark about the sale of the child by her husband.

Notably, the incident came to the fore after the Bhadrak Child Welfare Committee (CWC) got a phone call in this regard Tuesday morning. CWC members immediately rushed to the Kuansha village and found Pandya in an inebriated condition. When the CWC officials inquired about the child sale, the husband confessed to having sold his one-year-old son for Rs 25,000. He said he had purchased a saree, some jewelry and a mobile phone with the money earned through the sale of the baby. But he insisted that he had sold off his son not for money, but for his better future since they were poor.
